Storms Slide Across Southeast US

A cold front will move across the Southeast United States Wednesday night into Thursday triggering widespread thunderstorms along it. Some of these thunderstorms have the potential to become severe with large hail and damaging winds the main threats. Locations that have the best opportunities for a few severe storms include SE Arkansas, Mississippi, and Alabama where moderate wind shear will be combined with local instability. Heavy rainfall can be anticipated with the thunderstorms but flooding is not expected to be an issue.

Thunderstorm outlook for Wednesday into early Thursday showing a marginal risk for some parts of the Southeast.

Timing

Thunderstorms will continue to develop and impact the Memphis and Nashville metros around 8-9 PM EST. The storms will move east and become a line just ahead of the front fortunately clearing the Atlanta metro area just before the morning rush hour. However, wet roads will remain. Thunderstorms are expected to persist during the day Thursday working their way to the east and southeast.

Behind the Front

Temperatures have been running largely above average for the entire Southeast US. The front will provide a return to more seasonable temperatures and even some locations with below average temperatures. High pressure will create tranquil conditions and increased sunshine through the end of the work week.
